Western Ukraine is known for its incredible views thanks to tall coniferous trees and
mountains. Also, this city attracts many people, because there you can pick mushrooms and
berries, and in winter you can go sledding and skiing.
Today we would like to tell you about the village of Verkhovyna in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
And here are three places that you will definitely remember.
In the Roman Kumlyk's Museum of Hutsul life, ethnography and musical instruments, you can get acquainted not only with Roman's works, but also see a variety of instruments, including Hutsul folk instruments, such as sopilka, trembita and drimba (jaw harp). Also, the wife of deceased Mr. Roman will show you Hutsul clothes for those who want to change into them.
You will also find various things from the past like clocks, radios and more.
Are you inspired by the stories of the lady from the instrument museum?

Then, you can become a hero of Hutsul history by watching the film "Shadows of Forgotten
Ancestors" filmed by Serhiy Paradzhanov in 1964. This story is based on the novel of the same name by Mykhailo Kotsyubynskyi. And the most amazing thing is that the house-museum "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" is located in the village of Verkhovyna. This house was the site where this film was made. In the museum, you will hear the story of the film's creation, a brief retelling of the book and the director's drawings. This place is amazing! Feel the atmosphere of the film by yourself!
Also, this region is famous for the Hutsul Magic Museum. A young woman will tell about people with supernatural abilities in the Ukrainian Hutsul culture who are called molfars. They say molfars could heal people and change the weather.
In this museum you will see and even hold real belongings of deceased molfars, learn about
their abilities while alive and listen to the eerie stories of their lives and deaths.
Are there similar museums in your home country? Which of these museums would you like to
visit?
I suggest you talk about this and more at our online Ukrainian lessons.
